A Big Win For Small Businesses

The Sackville Business Association is pleased to present this year’s Sackville Business Awards winners. This campaign allows us to showcase Sackville’s businesses and business leaders that deserve recognition for their outstanding achievement or contribution to the Sackville business community. Despite a tough year for all, these businesses and leaders have much to celebrate. The three awards — Best New Business, Best Customer Service, and Business of the Year — were graciously presented by Mayor Mike Savage on Oct. 28 at the THRIVE Business Growth Conference. Voting was held online through September. Thanks to everyone who voted and participated in this year’s Sackville Business Awards. We hope you enjoy getting to know this year’s winners!

BEST NEW BUSINESS: THE SHAWARMA KING
Q: What does it mean to you to have won Best New Business?
A: It means a lot to me. I was so happy to hear that I won. The community supports me a lot here in Sackville, especially throughout the pandemic. They supported me and continue to support me, which is why I am still here.
Q: What would you say to those who voted for you?
A: Most importantly, I want to say thank you to everyone who helped me stay open throughout the pandemic. Thank you to the Sackville Business Association for supporting my business. I appreciate everyone who comes to eat at my business and we are ready to serve you great food and service.

BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE: ALYSSA’S FORMALS
Q: What brings customers back to you?
A: I believe the customer service is what keeps people coming back. I’ve been doing this for a long time. People will remember they got their wedding dress from us years ago and now they’re back with their daughter for her prom dress. It’s ongoing in that respect. We’ll see a family with five daughters, and every few years that family will come back for a dress.
Q: What does it mean to you to have won Best Customer Service?
A: Just the idea that people took the time out of their schedules to vote for us means everything. People’s lives are important and they have other things on the go. Even if it only took a few minutes to vote, it was a few minutes that they thought of Alyssa’s.

BUSINESS OF THE YEAR: SPORTWHEELS SPORTS EXCELLENCE
Q: What is something most people would not know about your business?
A (Jeff): There are two things most people would not know about our business. One is we started in 1947, so we are coming up on our 75th anniversary next year. The other is we moved to Lower Sackville because of the horse race track that used to be located at Sackville Downs. Back then, we were repairing and selling bicycles, but we were also doing Saluki repair for the horse race track.
Q: What would you say to those who voted for you?
A (Jeff): A huge thank you. Kevin and I are firm believers the business is only here as long as our customers see a need for us. As long as we can continue to give above and beyond service and use a portion of our profits to help disadvantaged and at-risk children who cannot afford sports, our giving forward model is able to continue. We are just super grateful everyone voted for us
