Get Moving Into 2022
< Back to Love, Sackville Articles

With a new year comes the opportunity for a fresh start, and the areas of exercise and wellness are no exception. The new year is a great time to commit to an active lifestyle. There are tons of ways to get active in Sackville; try new activities and make it fun!
“excited and nervous are the same physical feeling — the only difference is in your mind.”
Sara Corkum, owner of Motion Dance Centre (567 Sackville Drive), has a goal of sharing the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of dance with her students. Being a dancer since the age of three, Corkum has always had a passion for dance and has appreciated its ability to give her “a safe, healthy outlet to channel any pain, frustration, or doubt in movement.” Motion Dance Centre offers classes in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, and yoga to any age. When asked what tips she would give to newcomers or those who may be hesitant to join a class, Corkum used the same analogy she shares with her students before they go on stage: “excited and nervous are the same physical feeling — the only difference is in your mind.” Corkum encourages those who are looking for fun ways to get active in the new year to “turn those nerves into excitement, and come visit us at Motion Dance Centre for a free trial class!” You can find the full schedule of classes Motion Dance Centre offers at motiondancecentre.ca.

The Sackville Sports Stadium (409 Glendale Drive) also offers a variety of exciting ways to get active — for both members and non-members. Did you know snowshoes are available to be borrowed throughout the winter months for free? What a great way to get some fresh air and explore the neighbourhood during the snowy season! Public skates at the Stadium are always free and are offered daily. Free public swims are offered as well on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. A spokesperson for the Halifax Regional Municipality says, “The Sackville Sports Stadium offers a variety of group fitness classes, aquafit classes, pickleball, as well as a well-equipped fitness centre. Access to each class, as well as the fitness centre, can be purchased for $5 per visit.”
The municipality offers the Affordable Access Program — a program that subsidizes municipal services for qualified applicants. Application information can be found online at halifax.ca on the Affordable Access Program page. Further information on programs and activities in Sackville and surrounding areas can also be found online on the Parks and Recreation page of halifax.ca.
