CHRISTINA DOREY, TEAM LEAD OF SQUARE ROOTS

Sackville is a tight-knit community filled with amazing residents and organizations that continuously look out for their fellow neighbours. Square Roots, a local organization in Lower Sackville, helps many families by fulfilling their mission of providing affordable vegetables to the community. The Square Roots bundle service has been in operation since November of 2017 as a food security project of Acadia Recreation Club.

“I feel that everyone should have access to fresh and affordable produce; no one should have to go without.”

Christina Dorey, team lead of Square Roots, joined the organization during their early stages. When asked why she chose to be a part this organization, Dorey says, “I joined the team because I feel that everyone should have access to fresh and affordable produce; no one should have to go without.” By purchasing bulk produce from local farms to sell at an affordable price to the community, Square Roots is able to address food insecurity, limit food waste, build community capacity, and provide great volunteer opportunities. Dorey explains, “We serve a wonderful community that combines a vast range of income levels. We all “I feel that everyone should have access to fresh and affordable produce; no one should have to go without.” “We always love the help!” come together to help our neighbours who cannot afford traditional pricing on produce, help support farmers, and our community in the process.”

Square Roots bundle events are held every other Saturday at Sackville Public Library. Anyone can stop by from 10 a.m. to noon to purchase a 4.5 kg bag of produce for $5 per bundle. Alternatively, you can pay $10 so that someone else can benefit from a free bag. At a bundle event, you can expect to see an average of 15 volunteers meet in the morning to prepare the bags for pickup. Throughout the worst of the pandemic, the team at Square Roots offered delivery service at no cost to those who signed up. These incredible volunteers prepared 4.5 kg bags of produce and delivered them right to people’s doorsteps at absolutely no charge. Square Roots is now back to its storefront model at the Sackville Public Library and ready to serve anyone who could benefit from affordable fruits and vegetables.

"We always love the help!”

If you would like to volunteer, Dorey says, “you can reach out to [email protected] and I will add you to our email list. We always love the help!” Be sure to check out Square Roots Facebook page for updates on bundle events, to sign up for produce, and to volunteer!
